How it works

Why the price on the tub can fool you

Servings aren’t the same size. One scoop holds 18 g of protein, another 24 g. So the cheaper tub isn’t always the cheaper protein.

  1. 1We read the labelHow much of the ingredient is in one serving – from the NIH label database or the maker.
  2. 2We do the mathWhat the same amount costs in every product, for example 30 g of protein.
  3. 3Cheapest firstSorted by that number only. No brand can pay for a better spot.
Example: two protein powders

Protein per serving24 g18 g
Price per serving$1.62$1.41
Cost per 30 g protein$2.03$2.34

Tub B looks cheaper per tub and per serving. Per 30 g protein, Tub A costs less.

Questions

Questions and answers

Something else? Email us. How we get our numbers: How we check.

Why not just compare the price per serving?

Because servings aren’t the same size. One scoop of protein powder holds 20 g of protein, another 30 g. Only the same amount of the ingredient gives a fair comparison.

Is the cheapest product the best one?

Not necessarily. We compare price and what the label says, and our quality score only counts facts you can check – from the label, testing programs and studies. Products also differ in type (for example whey isolate or plant protein), format, flavor and testing. That’s why our lists can be filtered by type and show which products are NSF Certified for Sport.

Are your comparison amounts recommendations?

No. 30 g of protein or 5 g of creatine are round numbers that make products comparable. Where official bodies like the NIH or the EU food safety authority name an amount, we show it with the source. Nothing here is medical advice.

Can brands pay for a better spot?

No. Lists are sorted by the numbers only. We don’t earn money from the links at the moment – if that changes, every paid link will be marked.

How up to date are the prices?

Every price shows the date we checked it. The current prices are from US online stores, checked October 8 – November 1, 2026. Prices change often, so check the store before you buy.

My product isn’t listed. What now?

Add it yourself in Compare prices: type in the price, the servings and the amount per serving from the label. It works for 256 supplements.

Is this only for the US?

For now, our checked prices are from US online stores in US dollars. Products you add yourself also work in pounds and euros, so you can compare products from anywhere.
